In the 1980s, after the end of the Cultural Revolution, China launched a series of land reforms, aiming at supplanting the equal distribution of land method carried out in Maoist China, allowing farmers to take full responsibility for the profits and losses of their own farmland. Kuisheng, the madman of a village in Northern China, has been in charge of the most fertile peanut field for ten years. Once the reform began, his land was coveted by the villagers. With Spring Festival approaching, villagers are busy rehearsing a piece of traditional opera. While the rehearsal intertwines with the final negotiations of land-reallocation, a secret history of the village is revealed.
