The year is 1941. Student cinematographers Lev Alperin and Ivan Maisky compete for academic excellence and for the heart of the beautiful student actress Yuna. As the war approaches Moscow, all three of them refuse to be evacuated and instead volunteer for the front line. Yuna signs up to the concert brigade, and Lev and Ivan become front-line cameramen. The young men’s rivalry continues even off-campus, but the horrors of war and the heroism of Soviet soldiers that they witness transform their attitude towards their art and life in general. This allows them to film unique footage that will make history.
