Synopsis

The story of Loving Vincent takes place within one hundred and twenty of Van Gogh's greatest masterpieces. Paintings of his homeland in Holland; of Auvers where he died; Arles where he famously cut off part of his ear and was admitted to an asylum; Paris where he over-dosed on absinthe and the raucous bohemia of the times.
The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death. Each interviewee fiercely contests that they knew Vincent best, and know the circumstances of his tragic death, but who is lying, and who may have had a hand in his demise? We meet the mercurial Dr Gachet, failed artist and over protective father; his teenage daughter, Margaret, allegedly the last woman to be with Vincent; the strident Inn-keeper's daughter, Adeline Ravoux, keen to protect her family's reputation; the bull-fighter turned Asylum master, Trabuc; and Agostina Segatori, the famous Italian whore beloved of a raft of great Parisian artists.
The film investigates the theories around Vincent’s death. Was it suicide, or was he shot by a teenage boy who later in his life, just before he died, obliquely confessed to the killing?
