Crawling into a cave to evade a hungry tiger, monk Xuanzang (Shaofeng) accidentally releases the Monkey King, Sun Wukong (Kwok), who for his misbehaviour has been stripped of his powers and imprisoned within the Mountain of Five Elements by Buddha. Soon after, the Goddess of Mercy (Kelly Chen) appears and informs Wukong that he must escort Xuanzang to India to obtain a holy sutra.Wukong has no desire to undertake the pilgrimage, however Budda’s magic powers ensure that he complies and together with Xuanzang, demons Baije (Xiao Shenyang) and Wujing (Him Law), he sets off. Meanwhile on White Tiger Ridge, Lady White Bone (Gong-Li) seeks to renew her thousand year demonhood and hence must consume Xuanzang whose flesh will allow her immortality. She disguises herself and waits for her prey in the forest. And it’s not long before the travellers come into sight…
