Naonori Matsudaira is an unfortunate lord who is forced to move – at great expense – across Japan from west to east seven times. The strain of these repeated relocations takes its toll and after he dies, his mantle is inherited by the ineffectual Shunnosuke Katagiri (Hoshino). With no money, experience or manpower Katagiri is forced to relocate himself and his people thousands of kilometres away and if he puts one foot wrong he can be ordered to commit ritual suicide. As a result he seeks the aid of his childhood friend Takamura (Takahashi) and the beautiful but headstrong Oran (Takahata).
