After working in a big city for several years, 29-year-old journalist Sheng Nan (Yao) is struck down by cancer. Branded a “leftover lady” after her romance with a married man hits the rocks, she hopelessly watches her chance to live and love slowly slipping by. In order to raise money for surgery she accepts a commission to write a biography of an old painter who lives in seclusion high up in the mountains. Nan is accompanied on her trip by her mother Liang Meizhi (Wu Yufang) who lost her husband to a mistress and her appearance to a failed plastic surgery. As mother and daughter settle in to the tranquil surroundings, they reflect on their contrasting views of life and the paths they’ve taken.
