Korea, 1993. Two loan sharks Du-seok (Sung) and Jong-bae (Kim Hie-won) go after an illegal immigrant Korean-Chinese woman Myung-ja (Kim Yun-jin) who had borrowed money from them. When she fails to pay they take her 10-year-old daughter Seung-yi (Park) with the intent of keeping her for one night as a mild threat. However, the plan goes awry when Myung-ja is unexpectedly deported to China. The two men take Seung-yi under their wings and they bond to become a family. Nine years later, Seung-yi discovers her mother is dying and her final wish is that Seung-yi should live with her biological father in China. The two foster fathers reluctantly agree and cut off all contact with her in order she adjust to her new life. Finally, all grown up and having a successful career as an interpreter, Seung-yi (Ha) gets the chance to participate in a presidential summit. However, after receiving an urgent telephone call she gives up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and instead travels back to Korea…
