La noche del 29 de enero de 1990, poco antes de iniciarse la reconstrucción democrática en Chile, medio centenar de presos políticos se fugaron de la cárcel pública de Santiago por un túnel que 24 militantes del Frente Patriótico Manuel Rodríguez (FPMR) habían excavado durante 18 meses con herramientas tan rudimentarias como cucharas, tenedores y un desatornillador. Ni los presos comunes de las celdas cercanas ni los gendarmes que los vigilaban a diario descubrieron el plan que llevaría a 49 reclusos a alcanzar la libertad en uno de los escapes más sorprendentes y bullados de la historia penal chilena.
