On the outskirts of a small prairie town, a Greyhound bus makes an unscheduled stop. An old woman and a teenage boy step out. They look out of touch and out of time. “Why here?” whispers Rufus with uncertainty. The old woman touches his pale cheek affectionately with her withered fingers and brushes a greasy shock of black hair from his piercing eyes. “Because I can’t go any further. Promise me you’ll try to fit in.” “What if they find me?” worries Rufus. “They’re all dead and buried. No one remembers who you are Rufus.” The old woman touches his arm tenderly and steps onto the highway. Thud! Her soft flesh impacts with the steel grill of a speeding Kenworh eighteen-wheeler. A red cloud of mist fills the air. Airbrakes lock. Tires screech. Fine droplets of blood land on Rufus’ face. The tip of his tongue pokes from his mouth to lick the corner of his lips. Rufus doesn’t eat, drink or sleep. He doesn’t age or feel the passage of time. He is a mystery; an enigma, one of a kind. “There are no such things as vampires,” argues Rufus. “They’re just stories in books!” As local gossip spreads about the old woman’s bloody suicide and rumours fester about her orphaned travelling companion, Rufus is welcomed into small town life by the local sheriff and his caring wife. The learning curve is steep as Rufus encounters the town bully and the pretty girl next door. In a community where secrets are not easy to keep, Rufus is quick to discover that humans have their own personal demons, every bit as dangerous as his own claws and fangs. When a multi-national drug company discovers Rufus’ genome just might be the fountain of youth and a cunning vampire hunter arrives claiming the boy as the property of Bristol-Anderson Pharmaceuticals, Rufus knows it’s time to move on. The only problem is, Rufus likes his new life and the pretty girl next door. There’s no such thing as vampires! What’s a boy to do?
