THE STRONG SEX seeks a current understanding of male sexuality and questions stereotypes of masculinity. Which social ideals do men see themselves as committed to and which traditions can be broken in our ideas of masculinity? Director Jonas Rothländer confronted various men with anonymous confessions and testimonials from other men on the subject of sexuality and desire. Building on their reactions, the men reflect with remarkable openness on their own behavior and the qualities that define masculinity for them. What do social conventions do with one's own sexuality and to what extent does the perception of others shape the way we deal with weaknesses and emotions? In addition to the discussion about the expectations towards oneself, the expectations of the respective partners are also reflected. Traditional and modern role models collide.
Again and again, dominance is mentioned as a male attribute in these conversations. But when does a power play become an assault? And how do you deal with the resulting guilt? The film looks behind the facade of strength and dominance and mechanisms of heteronomy. THE STRONG SEX is a reflection on what masculinity means today.
