Log Line

Spain, 1755. A young woman is sent to a cloistered monastery in which several novices have been mysteriously bled to death. An unconventional Franciscan looks into these unsettling events. Everything seems to lead to an ancient tale that the new Enlightenment society would rather keep out of sight.

Synopsis

UPIRO is a blend of genres wrapped up in a horror film.
The story begins as an Agatha Christie-inspired locked room whodunnit. A murderer cannot go far in an isolated cloistered monastery.
It moves towards a giallo style as corpses start to pile up and the main characters run out of options.
Its ending resembles a legal drama in which the survivors must face the authorities from a time in which irrational explanations were not given credit on principle.
All of this set in the context of a well-documented period drama.
UPIRO takes us into a dark and oppressive world in times of resistance to reason and change. Fear is not to be sought through jump scares and simple sound effects, but rather through plot, characters and space. The goal is to create an unsettling atmosphere that becomes increasingly tense through frame composition and editing, supported at certain points by makeup and practical effects to create a feel of pure horror with perfect timing. To this end, the film shooting will take place in the astounding natural scenery of the Region of Murcia, in places which are hundreds of years old and ideal for using light and shadow to create all sorts of environments, from baroque aesthetics found in giallo to paintings from this very period, halfway between Ribera’s tenebrism and Goya’s Black Paintings. In a cloistered convent full of secrets and vows of silence, sound is fundamental. We intend to recreate the echoes and whispers still alive within its stone walls and combine them with a film score that offers an atmospheric journey of the purely orchestral with harmonic chants and electronic sounds to summon ancient forces.
