Synopsis

In the peak of summer, a carwash languishes. More than a job, the carwash has become a surrogate family to the small group of men. When Hakim returns to work after serving time, what was supposed to be a long awaited reunion between the workers quickly spirals into chaos. The carwash is being sold to developers and will be turned into condos. Hakim is determined to convince the owners not to sell. As they travel from place to place in search of him, an unexpected psychological journey unravels.

Short Statement by the director
Écume uses the carwash as a microcosm for a spectrum of socio-political conditions. Depersonalized capitalism plays out in a complex set of relations in an increasingly abstract economy. Écume is about masculinity, friendship, and the fragility of life under colonial capitalism.
