Synopsis

In 1969, in Switzerland, a young French journalist visits an opera singer (Małgorzata Zajączkowska) in her wardrobe. Although he claims that he is only there to interview her, his questions pull the diva towards painful memories and confessions. The two enter an erotic-verbal game, which reveals the woman’s complicated story: a Polish Jew Holocaust survivor who started singing in La Scala after the war. Bortkiewicz has written a screen-blowing aria for Małgorzata Zajączkowska, one which enables the actress to reveal her talent to the fullest. The performance of Zajączkowska is accompanied by the music of Richard Wagner, quotations from Thomas Mann, and camera work by Andrzej Wojciechowski, who has managed to give this low-budget production a bit of the old-fashioned glow.
