Albert Cohen’s tortuous love story revolves around an adulterous affair between Solal, an ostentatious Jewish French diplomat assigned to the League of Nations, and Ariane d’Auble, a beautiful blonde Protestant aristocrat married to Solal’s subordinate. Threatened by impending war and the growing anti-Semitism of Europe in the mid-1930s, the two must struggle to keep their passion alive.
