Spirit Anderson is a high school senior with a knack forEnglish. She is at the top of her class and one of her high school’smost promising students. She often uses her great command ofthe subject to her advantage in the courtyard when she israpping, her favorite pastime. However, with the end of theschool year approaching, Spirit finds that rapping and academicsaren’t always perceived as a perfect marriage and with herfamily’s situation, she can’t even afford the wedding. When hercounselor, Mr. White, implores her to declare a college before it istoo late, Spirit realizes that there is as much pressure on her regarding her future as is her home life. Spirit must ultimately fight through her fears and forced expectations to find the light that leads her onto her own path.
