A story about two Austria-Hungarian soldiers in the 1st World War, holding a post in the mountains on the front to Italy. Cut off from their own troops and under heavy artillery fire from the Italian, without help from the command, food and water, to survive becomes an existential challenge.

August 1917. The First World War rages in Europe causing hellish destruct ions. The Austro-Hungarian monarchy fights alongside of the Central Powers confederates on the southern front against the Kingdom of Italy, which is associated with the Entente. The Isonzo River is one location of bloody trench warfare around mountains and valleys, with millions of victims on both sides of the warring parties. Amidst the hell of war, the barrage of thousands of cannons, poison gas and air raids: the Bohemian Captain Jan Kopetzky, scion of a wealthy family, and Private Jakob Lindner, son of a craftsman are the sole survivors of an Italian artillery attack. They are holding post ‘R’, an artillery outlook post on the slopes of the Rombon, a mountain in the Julian Alps. The captain is seriously wounded and the young, inexperienced soldier was only recently drafted to the front. The next wave of attacks by the Italian army in this eleventh battle along the Isonzo is imminent. The strategically important observation point cannot be abandoned. Jacob remains on his post with the dying Captain on the last men’s stand. Their only connection to the outside is the field telephone.
