Tomas, a young orphan, is plucked out of a drab inner-city orphanage and adopted by Maire, a kind, vivacious woman, who lives on a remote island. Maire schools Tomas in her colourful, energetic approach to life and helps him to become friends with the island's other children. But as the gentle, timid boy slowly comes out of his shell, he faces the disapproval of Maire's gruff husband Alec, who can't relate to sensitive Tomas. When tragedy strikes, Tomas and Alec must each learn a different lesson from Maire's life in order to help each other find the way forward.
