When Leila barely survives an attack on her home, she finds her husband dead and her son Omid missing. On the verge of giving up and surrendering to a life that takes far more than it gives, she pulls herself together and goes to search for Omid. But chaos severely limits your options. On the one hand, merciless sun. On the other, the senseless patriarchal violence of the Taliban. Leyla!s possibilities are not many. So, she does what she has to do, the only way she can. First, she disguises herself as a man by dressing herself in her husband!s clothes, gluing his freshly cut beard to her own face. Then she leaves, thus cloaked in hopeful masculine invisibility, on an impossible journey
to find her child. In one of the journey!s darkest hours, Leyla crosses paths with Azad, a young child-dancer. Stretched beyond breaking, she must now also choose between pursuing her quest for Omid, and knowingly leaving this other child in the hands of the darkest evil.
