Maracana is the biggest exploit that football could tell, but it is also the history of a political bet of a government that created in its people the illusion of an early glory that would be reluctant, that would end in its own debacle and that would mark forever its society.

1950: Brazil gets the opportunity to organize the Football World Cup and, the government of president Mariscal Gaspar Dutra, prepares a whole artillery of actions to benefit from this exceptional opportunity to promote his administration to the whole country. The hope of people turns into conviction up to coming to an obsession. Far from the lights and the advertising pushed from the Brazilian politics, Uruguay, a 60 times smaller country but with a great sports past, sees with sadness how its selection team succumbs in an administrative chaos and in the widespread nonchalance of the managers. Nevertheless, this stage will be germinal of a group of unique characteristics that will find in the team captain Obdulio Varela a leader capable of unifying the players and leading them to the victory. Maracana is the biggest exploit that football could tell, but it is also the history of a political bet of a government that created in its people the illusion of an early glory that would be reluctant, that would end in its own debacle and that would mark forever its society. 2014 World Championship will re-live through that chapter of the history of football. Maracana will be reconstructed once again to return to illuminate its shows and to receive the illusions of the new generations who will construct its memory and its hopes in the shoulders of the national team.
