At the start of WWII, Salvatore Todaro commands theItalian Royal Navy submarine Cappellini. One dark nightin October 1940, while navigating in the Atlantic, hecomes upon an armed merchant ship sailing withoutlights. He shoots at the ship and sinks it. The Commanderthen makes a decision that was destined to go downin history. He takes the 26 shipwrecked Belgians onboard his already crowded submarine and aims for thenearest safe harbor, as prescribed by the law of the sea.To make room for them on board his submarine, he isforced to navigate on the surface of the water for threedays, visible to the enemy forces and endangering hislife and that of his men.
