Synopsis

“He” returned from space, bearing hope.
Itokawa—an asteroid in space 300 million kilometers away from Earth.
Hayabusa, a space probe, was sent on the world’s first mission to touch down on an asteroid and return with rock samples. Despite the extremely difficult mission and an accident which prolonged its return by three years, Hayabusa completed “his” voyage in space, traveling 6 billion kilometers over 7 years, and delivered a capsule containing samples to earth on June 13, 2010—while itself was burned to ashes in the atmosphere.
Behind this historic event, witnessed by the whole world, was the hard work of the Hayabusa project team. They encountered one crisis after another as the chemical engines failed, a fuel leak disabled attitude control and the solar paddle ceased to generate power. Yet, with resolve, refusing to give up or abandon their mission, the team united together to bring Hayabusa back to earth. Beneath this resolve was the powerful bond the Japanese scientists and engineers had with Hayabusa, which traveled alone in deep space. This grand project was built on the technical and human resources of the underappreciated people who were involved, each bringing their own individual ambitions. This film chronicles the untold story of the heart of such Japanese scientists and engineers who staked their lives on Hayabusa.
