Takumi Saito is the only child of a single mother who runs a home maternity clinic. One day, Takumi is invited by a friend to an anime fanzine convention where he happens to meet a housewife engaged in cosplay who goes by the character name "Anzu". Anzu lives in an apartment in the same neighbourhood as Takumi. Her husband, like her, was bullied as a child. Under intense pressure from her mother-in-law to bear a child, Anzu is forced to undergo infertility treatments and artificial insemination. With her husband's major Oedipus complex, Anzu is unable to look to him for support so instead turns to the anime characters of her youth for solace. Anzu invites Takumi to her apartment and dresses him up as her ideal character "Muramasa" and the pair begin a sexual liaison. Their rendezvous become a daily occurrence as their feelings for each other grow deeper. However, Anzu's husband eventually finds out what's going on after setting up a hidden camera. Someone then leaks the video and images from their tryst on the internet. Anzu's home and married life face ruin while Takumi shuts himself away in his room, unable to bear the pain of separation and the slandering from those around him. Meanwhile, Takumi's friend and classmate Fukuda maintains a meager existence, taking care of his dementia-afflicted grandmother and working a part-time job to stay above the poverty-line. And there is Takumi's mother Sumiko, who devotes herself to midwifery while questioning the meaning of the sometimes painfully short lives of the babies she helps bring into the world.
