After more than ten years of darkness, a martial arts myth returns.
Alone in the desert, Ouyang Feng makes his living as an agent for hired assassins. His only visitor every year is Huang Yaoshi, a friend from his youth. This year he brings a jar of magic wine, which he claims can make a man forget his past.
Ouyang Feng refuses to drink with Huang. So Huang gets drunk alone and his memory seems to fade away. Those he loved and those he hurt all disappear in a cup of wine.
Huang Yaoshi forgets his rendezvous with Murong Yang's sister. So Murong Yang hires Ouyang Feng to kill Huang in revenge. But the sister, Murong Yin, prevents him. Ouyang Feng slowly discovers that Murong Yang and Murong Yin are two split personalities of one hurt woman. In a night of drunkenness, she mistakes Ouyang Feng for Huang, and pours her heart out to him.
A wandering warrior arrives on Ouyang Feng's doorstep. This man was once Huang Yaoshi's best friend, until the night of his wedding, when he suspected something happened between his bride and Huang. Only a duel can kill his pain. But searching for Huang has left him penniless and blind. To earn the money he needs to journey home, he faces a band of desert bandits in a battle to the death.
Huang Yaoshi and Ouyang Feng share a love for the same woman. She longs for Ouyang Feng, but when he refused to profess his love for her, she married his older brother out of spite. In these games of love, no one is the winner.
One day, a letter arrives telling of her death. Ouyang Feng drinks the jar of magic wine, burns his hut, and leaves the desert. He returns to his home where he becomes known as Lord of the West.
