Ranti and Galih have always been together since they are very young, and their being together has put love in their hearts early on. In their village, there is no school, so Ranti aspires to be a teacher in her own village. Galih makes it his mission to turn Ranti’s dream into a reality. The tradition forbids Galih and Ranti to be together. There is a belief that if two people from Galih’s village and Ranti’s village – which are separated by a river – get married, disaster will strike. The two then temporarily separated when Galih must follow his parents who move to the city. Ranti goes through the years without Galih. Ranti waits for her love while she teaches children in her natural surroundings. After years of waiting, Galih returns to Ranti. Galih comes back to turn their dreams into a reality. Galih wants to build a school where Ranti will teach, complete with a water mill that will provide power for the village. But the society exiles them when Galih proposes to marry Ranti. Galih works really hard to complete the building of the school, while Ranti is locked up in her room by her father. Afterwards, Galih becomes ill. The villagers think that Galih’s illness is caused by breaking of the tradition. Galih persists with his struggle. At the same time, his condition worsens. Their fight for love fails to touch the hearts of the villagers. Galih’s illness has become so much worse and Ranti can’t take care of him because she is continually abused and locked up at her home. Eventually the school complete with a water mill stands by the river between the two villages. The power of Galih and Ranti’s love has made the villagers realize their erroneous perception that has kept two hearts from being together.
