Synopsis

Men for Hire is a creative documentary which depicts two major stories. The first one is about Maryla, a modern, working and mature woman; and the second one is about Rafał, a young student looking for his place in the world. Apparently, they have nothing in common; however, they represent two characteristic social groups in modern Europe.
Maryla is an example of women’s emancipation in contemporary Poland: one of those women who have achieved professional success, occupy important positions at work and very often earn more than men, yet have less free time. This affects these women’s private life. They simply don’t have enough time to get involved in any relationship. However, they still need socializing and, very often, as they participate in events such as weddings or going out to the theatre, they need to be accompanied by a man. And this is where a ‘man for hire,’ a kind of Geisha, comes handy.
Rafał, a young student at the Academy of Physical Training and our second protagonist, would like to be this kind of man. While following the story of Maryla, who is looking for a partner to accompany her at a wedding, and that of Rafał, who makes his first steps in this new profession, we examine this phenomenon in Poland, Germany and England.
Thus our film contributes to the traditions of social European documentary which deals with current dilemmas, problems and passions of the developing society we live in.
