Human magnet Lucien leaves his home, a small farm in Belgium, to join a travelling circus. But a call from the past proves louder than the call of love and dreams.

Lucien, a simple farmer's son, is born a human magnet. Spoons and forks stick to him, but his father forbids him to display this to the world. Secretly he dreams of a life as en artist, conjuring little birds. On the run-up to World War I, he joins a small travelling circus and, on the road, grows up to be an artist. But when his old life calls him back to his home town, he reluctantly forsakes the circus. He loses his talent but doesn't fit an ordinary life either... He doesn't fit in the world because the world doesn't fit him.
