Presented in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, Hlynur Pálmason’s latest movie (Winter Brothers, A White, White Day) is a masterly display of the directorial method. The spectacular, dramatic, and, at the same time, changeable and capricious landscapes of Iceland are a constant reference to the characters’ state of mind: they visualize the harshness of the rules, portray the iciness of the soul, and foreshadow piled up conflicts. A Lutheran pastor, Lucas (Elliott Crosset Hove), is heading towards his new parish through cold streams, bare rocks and emerald mosses. The young Dane is accompanied by the local guide and storyteller Ragnar (Ingvar Sigurðsson). From the very beginning, their relationship is full of tension. The pastor has a mission and passion for colonization, which the old man stubbornly opposes. Set at the end of the 19th century, the screenplay refers to the relations between Iceland and Denmark, though the complicated relations of power and submission that the director creates go beyond the historical accounts and religious hierarchies. Godland is a movie about loneliness, alienation and bitterness, but also about an artist who freezes and fixes life on glass negatives - just like a glacier.
