Synopsis

In the summer of 1945, a defeated Japanese Imperial Army battalion was at the border of Burma, trying to escape to Thailand. The war had come to an end. When Mizushima (Shoji Yasui) is sent by his regiment to persuade uniformed troops to lay down their arms and surrender, he is confronted with rejection. The devastating results of war separates Mizushima from his comrades and sets him onto a spiritual path of Buddhism. "Why are the corpses of our men left scattered all across Burma?"
