With distant dreams of becoming a rock star, 15 year old Udo Lindenberg left his hometown in the German province to train as a waiter in a luxury hotel. When the first chance came along to work as a drummer, he took it, and left his service apprenticeship behind.At seventeen, he was already playing drums professionally for US troops, but under a setting sun in the Libyan desert, his dreams hit a wall- too much whiskey, too much rock’n’roll.Back in Hamburg, he made ends meet as a drummer playing small gigs. His desire to sing in German was vehemently refused by music producers because rock sung in German was totally a “no go“. Frustrated, he fled to East Germany and began a short-lived but passionate affair with East-Berliner, Petra. Separated by the wall, they could see no future together. With a broken heart and new songs in his head, he ultimately made his way back to Hamburg…
