Just when Varg Veum seems to have gotten his act together, the past comes back to bite him. Veum has forsaken the dangerous life of a private investigator for a far quieter existence as a teacher. He has a new girlfriend and contemplates buying his own house. But then his nemesis, The Knife, gets out of jail. A judge is killed and a young girl disappears.
